Maintaining that warmth in your home during the cold winter months can get expensive quick. Here are a few tips to keep your home energy efficient during the season and hopefully leave you with a little extra money once spring rolls around!
Adjust the Temperature
If you’re convinced your heating system is the only way to keep the house comfortable during the colder months, consider only using it when necessary. When you’re home and awake, set your thermostat as low as you can handle. Maybe even put on a jacket! Then, when you’re asleep or out of the house, lower your thermostat by 10 to 15 degrees. This will save you a significant amount of energy and leave more money in your pocket than if you ran your heater at full blast for the entire day.
Use Natural Heating
There’s no need to turn up your thermostat when you can harness the heat from natural sources like fire and the sun. By opening curtains and blinds on your south-facing windows during the day, you let a lot of sunlight and warmth into your home. Conversely, be sure to close them at night to reduce the chill coming off of cold window glass.
If you have a fireplace, now’s the time to use it! Installing tempered glass doors and a hot-air exchange system can keep warm air from the fire circulating inside. If you have a fireplace but don’t intend to use it, plug and seal the chimney plume so warm air from your heater does not leak out.
Seal the Leaks
All the hot air in the world won’t keep you warm if it doesn’t stay inside your home. Finding and sealing any air leaks in your house will reduce the amount of heat escaping, keeping your living areas warm without overworking the heater.
You can add caulk or other weather stripping material yourself to doors and windows, but heat’s natural tendency is to rise. That means the valuable warmth you’re paying money for could be leaking out of your roof. If that’s the case, you’ll want to call a professional to perform a thorough examination of the space.
